Åseral is an inland municipality in Agder county with large moorland and mountain areas. Åseral borders Hægebostad and Kvinesdal in the west, Bygland and Evje and Hornnes in the north and east, and Lyngdal in the south.
Wildlife includes elk, roe deer, red fox, hare, lemming, mountain ptarmigan, caribou, and lynx. Acid rain has also reduced many trout tribes in the area. The calcareous phyllite areas in the north and west have some trout, while brook trout are released into the more acidic waters that dominate the municipality. The upper part of the Mandal watercourse is located in Åseral and consists here of three main courses: Skjerka, Monn and Longa. These meet in the lake Øre, and from the mouth of Øre the name is Mandalselva. Gyvatn, Nåvatn and Rundatjønn are other lakes in the municipality.
