The oak monkey is located close to the mountain at the end of Ørevatn in Åseral People have lived on Eikerapen for over 500 years. The name comes from the fact that the hillside down towards Ørevatn forms a "rap" and that a lot of oak has always grown in this rap. There are about a hundred huts. Eikerapen is Norway's southernmost winter destination with its own alpine center and miles of ski trails. In addition to the alpine center, Eikerapen has a mini golf course, tourist center with long-term rental of cabins, pub, bathing areas, hotel and marked hiking trails summer and winter. Eikerapen is located at the southernmost part of the Norwegian long mountains and offers nature experiences all year round. West of the Oak Monkey are Balnelia and Balnehommen. The place got its name because after the rare yew. It is approx. 10 km from Eikerapen to the municipal center in Åseral, Kyrkjebygda. In Kyrkjebygd there is a bank, grocery store with mail, café, construction market, snowmobile/atv shop and petrol station. Eikerapen is one of three cabin and winter sports centres in Åseral municipality. The others are Bortelid and Ljosland, both about 30 minutes drive from Eikerapen. The Oak Monkey Roots Festival is held every year in the first week of August. Each year, the festival attracts around 6,000 guests to the small village.
